The redelivery rate is 19.1% in Japan (according to a survey by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Dec. 2014), which is one of the factors that worsens the short-of-hands problem in delivery industry. The “19.1%” is equal to 90,000 working force (calculated based on 8 hours for 250 days by person) As one of solutions which could resolve the problem, Amazon.com launched “Amazon Key” ― combining a smart lock with a cloud-connected camera (Amazon Cloud Cam) to let delivery drivers open your front door and drop off packages. I wonder if the service for the U.S. will be popular in Japan as well. In the U.S., the service which requires strangers to enter rooms such as babysitter service is common, so that Amazon Key could be popular as well. However, even less people in Japan pursue convenience even if they sacrifice their privacy than those in other countries (according to EMC Privacy Index 2014). Therefore, it could be the issue that Amazon Key service will be widely used in Japan. It would be ideal that Amazon will launch a trial operation to get rid of distrust for the service only in a busy area where the redelivery rate is remarkably high, and there is a large demand for the service.
